Before You Ask
Yes. The wax-up is the cornerstone of our workflow. It establishes function, esthetics, and predictability—serving as the blueprint for every successful case. The wax-up fee is included in the overall cost, so there are no additional charges or surprises.
Please provide pre-operative scans along with a full-face portrait photo of the patient smiling. The scans are merged with the photo during design, allowing the wax-up to be fully facially driven and clinically predictable. If the patient does not show teeth in a natural smile, please also include a retracted full-face photo to ensure proper visibility and reference during the design.
For cases involving worn dentition and VDO changes, you have two options:
Physically record the bite at the new VDO using a leaf gauge while taking the bite scan.
Allow us to increase the VDO virtually in ExoCAD using the virtual articulator. In this case, simply submit the patient’s natural bite.
Once the wax-up is approved, the bite must be recorded again at the new established VDO for the final restorations. The recommended method is to transfer the wax-up intraorally as a mock-up, using either a putty-silicone matrix or a wax-up model that has the preoperative teeth protruding through. This type of model ensures the mock-up seats fully without being held up by existing tooth structure.
With the mock-up in place, prep through one segment (either anterior or posterior) while leaving the rest of the mock-up intact. This allows the patient to close into the new VDO and provides bite scan data that correlates with both the preps and the approved wax-up. If all teeth are prepared without this step, there is nothing to hold the bite at the new VDO.
An alternative is to use bite registration material (Blu-Mousse) as you work through the arch, though this approach is more prone to inaccuracies. Maintaining a stable, accurate bite record throughout treatment is critical for success.
There’s no single required sequence — some doctors choose to prep all the teeth at once, others prefer to segment treatment. The key is maintaining an accurate bite scan.
If you prep everything at once, there’s less room to pivot if something is off. For that reason, we recommend a phased approach when restoring a full mouth:
Start with the lower arch to establish the occlusal plane.
Use the approved wax-up as a mock-up in the mouth (via a silicone putty matrix using the wax-up model with preoperative teeth protruding through). This also serves as a depth-cut guide.
Prep through one section first (posterior quadrant or anterior segment). Leave the rest of the mock-up intact so the patient can bite into the new VDO while you capture a bite scan that correlates with the preps.
Finish prepping the remaining teeth on that arch.
Scan the bite, the prepped arch, the opposing arch. Submit those scans to Lumin.
We will design and deliver the final restorations for that arch.
Once the lower restorations are seated, proceed with the upper arch using the same sequence: mock-up, partial prep and bite scan, then complete the preps. This ensures the VDO is maintained accurately at each stage, and provides the flexibility to adjust if needed while keeping the workflow predictable.
Yes, but we generally recommend segmenting the treatment to preserve an accurate bite record. If you do choose to prep everything at once, maintaining accuracy with the bite scan is critical.
We do accept cases involving implants; however, we do not design or manufacture screw-retained crown and bridge work. Our process involves a two-step approach. If you have a case involving a cement-retained crown and/or bridge, we ask that you send the case to TruAbutment or Atlantis prior to sending it to us.
It is important to note that all prep work should be completed while following the recommended protocol before scanning the arch with the scan bodies in place. This ensures that the core file you receive back from TruAbutment or Atlantis includes both the preps and the virtual abutment design, allowing us to design everything together for a harmonious and straightforward outcome.
Once you receive the core file that contains the preps and virtual abutment design, you can submit that file to us either through DS Core (by adding it to the existing case files) or directly through the case portal. After the abutment design from TruAbutment or Atlantis is approved, they will ship the custom abutment directly to you, while we will send the final restorations separately.
Yes, as long as the implant restorations are cement-retained. Screw-retained cases are not supported. Please follow the implant protocol outlined in our FAQ.
No. The Lumin Collection is dedicated exclusively to complex restorative dentistry. We do not accept any case under 6 units, and our focus is on 10+ unit, full-arch, and full-mouth transformations. We also do not accept removable prosthetics or screw-retained implant restorations.
